Finding My Calm

Frequently Asked Questions

What ages is Finding My Calm best for?

Ages 2–6 is the sweet spot—toddlers and young children love the whimsical wolf-child and can connect with the "big feelings" that come when having to learn new things or start kindergarten or school. Parents say it's perfect for preschoolers learning to self-regulate, but even toddlers enjoy the rhymes. I wrote it for the little wildlings who need calm in their chaos.

How does Finding My Calm help toddlers with tantrums and big emotions?

The book follows a child through "stormy" feelings, using a senses-based rhyme ("5 things I see, 4 I feel, 3 I hear, 2 I smell, 1 I taste") to guide back to calm. Simple … yet effective, helping them to find their calm. It has been amazing the emails we have received about many children having embraced the little rhyme and how it has helped them to regulate themselves. Which is the end-goal.

Young children learn it's okay to feel big emotions with a way to choose calm—This review from a grandparent: "Love the books, my little grandson is learning the 5 4 3 2 1 and rarely gets beyond 3 before he finds his calm.”
What's the difference between Finding My Calm and other calm-down books for kids?

Most books say, "take a breath" and stop. I while that is an effective tool, for some children at a young age that is still quite hard to do when a big emotion hits. Born from my therapy journey, it's yet another simple tool that can be so effective — leaving your child empowered and able to trust themselves to get through big emotions. This book is helping kids (and parents) build emotional intelligence early to break cycles.

Are there tips for parents or is it just for kids?

It's for the whole family! So often we get emails telling us how the children recommend using the tools from our books to their parents when they notice they are stressed. I mean, how amazing is that! All the tools in our books I had to learn as an adult and while they may seem a bit silly, they work and helped me change my life and put an end to my anxiety and depression. We also have a free posters to keep the learning going that you can print and stick up at home, kindergarten or school. All our books, including this one, have parent/teacher notes at the back with lots of extra information for you to work through.

How can I use Finding My Calm daily to support my young child's mental health?

Read it as a bedtime or "cool-down" ritual—pause at the wolf-child's big feelings to ask, "Have you ever felt like that?" Do the ‘5 Things I can see’ exercise together. The more you practice the more the tool can be used when a big emotion hits. One page a day = calmer tomorrows.

Ordering direct from Wildling Books ensures you receive the book with dyslexia friendly font and text that is gentle for neurodivergent children.

Another stunning picture book with a new technique from the Wildling crew to help younger children find calm through the rollercoaster of emotions they can experience.

Teaching children mindfulness through the senses at a young age can help them build confidence, learn to cope with stress and realise they can overcome challenging moments in their life.

The fun ‘Five, Four, Three, Two, One’ rhyme is an easy way for children to remember to use their senses to find their way back to calm.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Another gem in the Wildling Books series, Finding My Calm is a must-have resource to top up your wellbeing toolkit. Empowering parents and teaching children ways to cope with their big feelings, this is a gorgeous book with a powerful and grounding message for our wee ones. As a mental health advocate and a māmā, one of my aims is to help children to identify emotions and learn ways to manage them; this book does just that.” – Rebekah Ballagh, counsellor, author and illustrator, Journey to Wellness.
